Jude lost everything one spring day when he crashed his car into an apple tree on the side of the road. A man is dead, and there’s no way he can ever right that wrong. He’d steer clear of Colebury, Vermont forever if he could. But an ex-con in recovery for his drug addiction can’t find a job just anywhere.

For Sophie Haines, coming face to face with the man who broke her heart is gut-wrenching. She knows it’s foolish to yearn for the man who returned all the heartsick letters she wrote him in prison. But the looks he sends her now speak volumes. No one wants to see Sophie and Jude back together, least of all Sophie’s police chief father. But it’s a small town. And forbidden love is a law unto itself.

5 stars!

“All we ever had were stolen moments.”

Oh my book feels! This book went above and beyond, it destroyed my feels and then gave me even more feels. Steadfast is about Jude; we met him in the first book of the series, Jude is an ex-con trying to put his life back together after a tragic accident that put him behind bars and destroyed more than one life.

After Bittersweet, Jude is going back home trying to fit in and live out the rest of the days until he is needed back in Vermont. But things don’t go as planned when it runs into his ex and things start happening.

Sophie and Jude’s relationship is carefully introduced through mini flashbacks and snippets but it is done so carefully and so perfectly timed that I would totally read a prequel or something, I just want more teen Sophie and Jude, it was so good, you can feel the love even from the very beginning of the story and despite the years they’ve been apart.

“Of all the things I’d lost – my good name, the chance to get a decent job, my carefully restored car – none of them mattered as much as Sophie.”

After Jude going away, Sophie had to deal with the mess that was left behind on her own. Her family fell apart, she lost so many people so soon and yet she had to deal with moving on and caring for her family and trying to put it back together, all the while missing Jude but that, too, was wrong to feel. I loved her character. She was so strong and so well put together, she took care of her mom and tried to live a normal life but she never let the hurt affect her feelings for Jude and the connection was still strong.

“An addiction is when you can’t keep away from something that’s bad for you. Maybe Jude was a drug addict, but I was a Jude addict.”

Where the first one is funny and easy to read with humor and generally a feel good book, Steadfast is deep, angsty and raw. It makes you feel stuff, it makes you connect with the characters in such a deep level, you feel their pain and their emotions. So good ♥

  1. Ack! This sounds so, so GOOD! The only thing I’ve ever read by Bowen is Him and as much as I loved that one I’m dying to read more from her. I just know this one will make my heart hurt but I love a good emotional story. Great review, Kei!
