The Writing of 53 Letters for my Lover and an excerpt ♥

5 beautiful stars!

Oh this book…

I never wanted to let this world go, I wanted to climb inside and live there. It’s safe to say that from the start this book caused some ugly crying. You know, the kind that turns into a sobbing mess and it just won’t stop. And I loved every minute of it!

I have to mention that this story deals with cheating and other mature stuff.

Now, from the moment I read the blurb and saw the trailer – and that AMAZING cover! – I knew this one was different, like on a whole other level different from the rest.

“My grandma used to say that people born on the same day are two halves of the same soul.”

Let that quote sink in for a moment.

Shayda and Troy were born on the same day on different sides of the world. Their love story spans through three decades, they first met at the age of twenty, Shayda was a newly wed girl and Troy a college guy.

“Don’t move. There’s a butterfly. On your shoulder.”

I froze. I don’t know why. I couldn’t even see it.

“What color?” I asked.

“Red.”

“Red?” I felt that molten blue stare on me again.

“It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve seen,” he said.

Troy has everything a person could ever want but he cannot have her; and Shayda has her whole life planned for her and she can’t break the rules and follow her heart. Ignoring that spark with a man she only met for a few moments, she goes on with her life. Separated by circumstances for a decade they meet again to continue what was until then only a memory, in their thirties.

A little bit of background story.

Shayda’s family sends her away from Iran to Canada in a modern-day arranged marriage – even though it wasn’t set in stone it was pretty clear what her family wanted for her and dutifully she followed their wishes and married a kind man her family approved. Having his own demons to fight, Shayda and her husband make a mutual agreement of understanding, they’d let their marriage naturally evolve.

Troy is the eternal bachelor, apart from his relationship with Shayda that no one knows, everyone is trying to play matchmaker and set him up but luckily there is no extra drama or other people trying to create it, like I said, this book is so beautifully written and on another level. It is about love and beyond the limits of how love is defined, about loss and survival, about two people able to hold on to each other though everything life throws at them.

Troy & Shayda

Shayda’s world is different. Her culture allows people to behave differently – at some point her own mother encouraged her to find a boyfriend because that’s the way people were used to, her own mother knowing about her husband and his mistress. And throughout the book we can see her struggle to not become her father.

Her relationship with her husband and her relationship with Troy could not be any more different. With her husband she shares a painful past that bonds them and of course two adorable children. Their relationship could be described more like two roommates raising their kids and keep a friendly marriage.

But with Troy they become alight and not even all those years apart could keep them away from one another.

“He says my name like he’s been holding it in his mouth for a long time, savoring it, letting his tongue taste each vowel, each consonant, before releasing it.”

Their relationship never feels wrong. That was one of the things I loved about this book, they’re never too much, they don’t get bold or over the top, they just are, opportunities and circumstances just seem to find them naturally.

“You want me to choose?”

“It’s not about what I want. Or what anyone else wants. What do YOU want, Shayda?”

If you are in need of something different – definitely a good cry – a strong love story and amazing lovable and deep characters, this beautifully written book is for you.
